9 – 16 November
“When a woman is being buried alive, she will reach for even the grubbiest tool to dig herself out again.”
Suffolk, England, 1759. A small rural town awaits the celestial spectacle of Halley’s Comet whilst a grisly trial unfolds. Young Sally Poppy, accused of murdering a local girl, faces the gallows. But at the eleventh-hour she makes a powerful and startling disclosure of pregnancy. A jury of matrons must now conclude if Sally is expecting, or simply lying to avoid the death penalty.
Class, wealth, fertility and feminism echo through the ages in Lucy Kirkwood’s explosive courtroom drama, as twelve women wrestle with the fate of another.
