“Violent” and “dance” are words rarely seen together. Dancing is often described as graceful and beautiful, instead of violent and aggressive. Yet there are times where dance can be gracefully violent or beautifully aggressive. Dance is not restricted to themes of love and wonderment; it is fully capable of exploring the realms of war and death for example.

Hofesh Schechter’s Grand Finale is billed as “part gig, part dance, part theatre and wholly original.” While the narrative is somewhat unclear, it conveys conflict and the way that it impacts those engulfed in it. Perhaps there are moments intentionally reminiscent of modern wars in the Middle East, but this could easily be my projection onto a piece with a wholly different meaning.

From start to finish the choreography is bold and energetic, at times reminding me of the film The Raid, albeit more graceful here. Not once did the energy drop, making each and every moment of action or stillness full of life. Watching the ensemble work together so well, and maintaining their stamina throughout, was an absolute delight.

My assumption is that the “part gig” section of the piece refers to the live music playing throughout. I’d argue that it is a mild exaggeration to call it a gig, but nevertheless the music is incredibly moving and very well suited to the piece. A few sections of the music felt a little too repetitive, but never to a point where it detracted from the action on stage.

Visually, there was a particular style to the lighting throughout. It had clearly been designed to draw focus to sections of the stage, and did so effectively. Alongside the music and minimal staging, it was incredible how easy it was to be drawn into the world of the piece. Claustrophobic staging and lighting were immensely engaging, and proved the great versatility of the space.

This is the second dance piece I’ve seen at The REP now, and once again I’m wildly impressed. Creativity oozes from Grand Finale, leaving me with an experience I will remember for quite some time. As long as The REP continues to show pieces like this, I will be there to enjoy every minute of these magnificent productions.    ★★★★☆     Jeremy Ulster   26th April 2018
