Pop music presented by Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Paines Plough, in association with Latitude Festival, is an outstanding piece of 90s nostalgia, filled with so much pop music from spice girls all the way to Whitney and Michael Jackson. This show is for anyone who has ever been to a school disco, or made a fool of themselves on the dance floor, it is so beautiful written that it is bound to get the audience cringing as they relive these moment through the eyes of Kayla and G
Katherine Kotz is hilarious as Kayla, a 30-year-old divorcee, hitting midlife crisis. Kayla is so full of despair as she asks the age-old question is there more to life? After a 10 year marriage ends and she has no idea where to go next, she relies on DJ Danny for a night of cheesy pop classics to kick her back into life. Yet is the music ever enough? She is joined on stage by Rakesh Boury as the music loving G. Boury brings so much energy and emotion to the role, you can’t help feel connected to his story, a music geek who has a special relationship with his mother.
One of the best things about Pop Music is how accessible it is for everyone, with constant British sign language all the through the show from the very talented Ciaran Alexander Stewart, and even the dialogue coming up on a screen. It was refreshing to see they have about how everyone can enjoy the show.
Pop Music is a show for anyone who loves pop, anyone who can recite spice girls lyrics word perfect or can remember all the dance routines to Beyoncé. This show contains so much joy and heart break, it will have you shedding a tear one minute and laughing the next. ★★★★☆ Georgina Randall 18th September 2018
