English Touring Opera returns to Cheltenham with three great operas encompassing love and war, comedy and epic tragedy.
Giulio Cesare is a tale of passion and revenge, a majestic opera packed with great arias of immense dramatic intensity. Handel’s celebrated opera follows Julius Caesar’s conquest of Egypt and his uneasy alliance and romance with Cleopatra, set against the great power struggles of 18th century Europe in James Conway’s acclaimed 2020 production.
Countertenor Francis Gush as Caesar and Susanna Hurrell as Cleopatra lead the cast, with Alexander Chance as her brother Tolomeo and Carolyn Dobbin and Margo Arsane as the grieving family of Caesar’s enemy Pompey. Music comes from the period instrument specialists of the Old Street Band, conducted by Sergey Rybin.
