An account of ‘Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory’, the Bristol theatre company founded in 1999 by Andrew Hilton, which over twenty years won an international reputation. Alongside a richly illustrated production-by-production account, Hilton writes extensively about his approach to the plays and reflects on the crisis in Shakespeare production now and about the seismic changes he has witnessed and experienced in theatre practice over the past half century.

About the author
Andrew Hilton is an actor, director and playwright. He created Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory in Bristol in 1999, directing 39 productions for the company, at the Tobacco Factory, the Bristol Old Vic, the Barbican Pit, and on tour in the U.K., the Irish Republic, Germany and Romania.
His Shakespeare productions at the Tobacco Factory were widely praised; but he has also been a noted director of Molière and Chekhov. His account of his 2009 production of Uncle Vanya at the Bristol Old Vic was broadcast by the BBC as part of Radio 3’s The Essay Series.
In 2013 he was made an Honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Bristol for his services to theatre in the city. 2022 saw the publication by Nick Hern Books of his book on Shakespeare production, Shakespeare on the Factory Floor.
