????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

2nd – 13th September.

This is the UK première of the Oscar-nominated Strawberry and Chocolate – a story of friendship, understanding and Cuba.

Havana, 1979: David meets Diego. Lured to his apartment under false pretences, David discovers forbidden treasures, contraband books, music, American whiskey and very open criticism of the Castro regime.

When Miguel, a fellow activist of the communist youth, convinces David to spy on Diego, temperatures rise as the two men debate about nationality, politics, art and sexuality. Diego and David find themselves redefining what it means to be the new Cuban man.

Strawberry and Chocolate is directed by Bristol Old Vic Theatre School Graduate Nancy Medina, the successful director who was awarded our Emerging Director Prize for 2014. We’re proud to award this prize annually for an exceptional director from the school to direct a show in the Brewery Theatre, as one of the ways we incentivise theatrical talent to stay in Bristol.

The production’s designer will be Max Johns, graduate of Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, who worked previously with Nancy on Dutchman, during the Directors’ Cuts Season in May.
