I thought it sounded a bit like a modern interpretation of Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus – man having a pretty tough time of it has a chance encounter with the Devil – so far, so similar. Circa Tsuica is a French company of entertainers who are making their UK debut with the Opus 7 tour. Their show is a combination of excellent music (primarily on brass instruments) and acrobatics. KING LEAR at Blackwell’s, Oxford

The play takes place in Blackwell’s wonderful Norrington Room . . . it’s a lovely space to enjoy a play, surrounded by such a wealth of knowledge and literature. Creation Theatre channels the bookish vibe by using books as some of their very minimal props and to create clever sound effects. The costume design is outstanding, taking the drama outside of a particular time or place and allowing the personal aspect of Shakespeare’s play to take precedence over a more political setting.

FLARE PATH at the Oxford Playhouse

Terrence Rattigan’s 1940s play Flare Path is a love story set against the backdrop of a town near an RAF airbase during the Second World War. Actress Patricia Warren is married to a dashing and confident young bomber pilot, Teddy Graham, but is still in love with an old flame, the famous actor Peter Kyle, with whom she has rekindled an affair after bumping into him some time into her marriage . . . Light and sound effects are put to extremely effective use to convey the movements of aircraft to and from the nearby airfield . . .
