★★★☆☆ The odds on Eccleston seemed favourable. To watch him in TV dramas is to be engulfed by the suppressed tension and conflicted emotion that radiate from his large frame. A quality that could well illuminate Shakespeare’s play, which is focused through Macbeth’s mind.

ROMEO AND JULIET at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford

★★★☆☆ Shakespeare’s play with its eternal insights into romantic love amidst feuding gangs resonates with modern youth, and transfers successfully to a current day setting. Just substitute knives for rapiers. And nobody mention the existence of that inconvenient plot-busting device, the mobile phone.
