★★☆☆☆ It is intensely frustrating when there are clear virtues in a play but it is ultimately unwound by too many hiccups and overarching structural issues. ENGLISH TOURING OPERA at the Everyman in Cheltenham

IL TABARRO and GIANNI SCHICCHI . The former is simply staged against a large monolithic dock that looms over the singers – perhaps hammering home a sense of their insignificance and futility. Gianni Schicchi is cluttered, bustling and lived in. It is looks and feels elaborate. Overall, an excellent short season from ETO at the Everyman – as usual.
