★★★★☆ Many will already be familiar with this ballet’s music, if not the movement. The clog dance in the second act is a favourite on Classic FM, and although Hérold might not be a composer whose name rings many bells, his tunes are very familiar in that “I’ve heard this somewhere before” kind of way.

★★★★★ I have said this before, and I will say it again, there is great value in seeing something different in the theatre. It may be nice to rewatch classics such as Les Miserables, but if we linger on their nostalgia, gems like Taj Express won’t get their time in the limelight.

★★★☆☆ The dancers responded brilliantly and revelled in the fun and liberty of the music . . . In The Upper Room was a perfect programme choice to raise spirits at the end of the night. It would be the one work from the evening that I would enjoy seeing again.

★★☆☆☆ I would argue that revivals are not something to be avoided, but there are shows that need to be revived and shows that should be left alone. As we seem to be flooded with revivals and jukebox musicals, perhaps it would be an idea to allow new material to flourish. Jeremy Ulster 4th June 2018
