What happens when you spend thirty years trying to teach Of Mice and Men to disengaged secondary school students?
Former English teacher Andrew Brooke has finally found the answer—and turned it into a hilarious one-man comedy show.
Glove Fulla Vaseline is a funny, musical and painfully recognisable look at the realities of life in the classroom. After three decades attempting to bring John Steinbeck’s classic novel to life for generations of reluctant GCSE students, Andrew now invites audiences to experience the chaos, absurdity and occasional triumphs of teaching through stand-up comedy and original songs inspired by George, Lennie and the gang.
The show’s strapline says it all: “The trauma of thirty years spent attempting to teach Of Mice and Men to disengaged secondary school students.”
Having sold out performances in Brighton, London, Wells and Cardiff, Andrew’s latest tour stop brings the show to Bristol’s Alma Theatre and Tavern for two nights only.
Andrew spent thirty years teaching in secondary schools across Sussex and Somerset before taking the plunge into comedy. Inspired by fellow ex-teacher and comedian Greg Davies, he enrolled on Logan Murray’s renowned comedy course in London after hearing Davies discuss it on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island DiscsHe now lives in Wells with his family, having relocated there in 2010 after falling in love with the setting of the classic British comedy film Hot Fuzz.
