“…we think we have choices. We think we make choices. But it’s all beyond our control…”
German playwright Frank Wedekind’s notorious creation, Lulu, is reborn in this premiere production of Angela Carter’s bold, darkly comic adaptation – a fierce, expressionist reimagining that shatters the longheld myth of the femme fatale.
For Lulu is many things: muse, monster, fantasy. Those she meets unveil their desires and obsessions – revealing more about themselves than her – each encounter drawing them closer not to Lulu’s power, but to their own unraveling.
Rising from obscurity into a world of wealth, lust, and moral decay, Lulu moves through shifting identities and projections. Desire is electric, danger lurks in the grotesque and absurd, and the line between victim and predator dissolves.
Through Lulu’s eyes, Carter transforms Wedekind’s scandalous classic into a provocative, gothic, and darkly comic exploration of gender, sexuality, and the stories we tell about women who refuse to be contained.
Lulu is is performed by graduating acting students and supported by Technical Theatre Arts students from Bristol School of Acting.
