★★★★★ The first live theatre I ever saw was a Bristol Old Vic production of Dick Whittington way back in the mid-1950’s, starring Lally Bowers as Fairy Snowflake. ROMEO AND JULIET at Bristol Hippodrome

★★★★☆ It is not hard to see why a tale of youngsters in opposition to an oppressive older generation might have appealed to Rudolf Nureyev, and it is his interpretation of Romeo and Juliet that we see in this English National Ballet production . . . it is Jurgita Dronina’s Juliet that is the outstanding performance of the evening. She is utterly captivating.

WAR HORSE at the Bristol Hippodrome

★★★★★ It is the horses, Joey and Topthorn, who are the true stars of the show. That 50 kilos of cane, leather and aluminium can become a living, breathing horse is a wonderful testament to the power of the human imagination and the magic of theatre. Last night there were many in the audience who were moved to tears. War Horse is simply wonderful.
