★★★★☆ Our heroine, Helena, lives alone or in flat-shares. She loves cats and feeling lonely and in need of a furry cuddle gets a ginger kitten, described as cute, loving and friendly, from an ad in the paper. The cat turns out to be a monster, dominating her life and destroying her home . . . As a cat lover myself, I enjoyed and sympathised with Passpawt, so more power to Heavenlee’s elbow.

★★★★☆ With The Crucible Miller steps out of his Brooklyn milieu, out of his comfort zone and away from the trials and tribulations of men failing to retain their grip as their world crumbles around them . . . When the play first saw the light of day America was in the throes of a metaphorical witch hunt as the House Committee for Un-American Activities sought to weed out and destroy what it perceived/believed to be the threat of Communism.

★★★★☆ Abigail’s Party is Mike Leigh’s masterpiece. It is basically a tirade against marriage (he was married to Alison Steadman at the time) and suburbia and is a masterclass in airing one’s dirty linen in public with Beverly and Lawrence constantly at each other’s throats, Tony and Angela hardly speaking to each other and Susan recovering from a divorce. Beautifully observed and written as though with a cut-throat razor it was often painful to watch.

★★★★★ Sally Cookson has taken Frederico Fellini’s 1954 Oscar winning masterpiece and, while retaining all the original elements, has produced a piece of innovative, vibrant and exciting theatre that is a near-masterpiece in itself . . . [she] produces some of the most exciting and original theatre currently extant and you won’t find a better example of it than La Strada.
