AVENUE Q at Bristol Hippodrome

Online reviews for this show range from ‘I have been to see Avenue Q three times and STILL came out desperate to see it again,’ to ‘Favourite moment: Leaving at interval.’ While not quite falling into the second category, I have to admit it failed to appeal . . . Yes there were some catchy, quite witty if moralistic songs but the whole thing relied heavily on our remembered love of puppetry classics such as Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, and that’s where it fell down for me.

SWAN LAKE at Bath Theatre Royal.

There were outstanding cameos during the second act. Viktoriya Zhukova was eye-catching in the Spanish dance at the prince’s coming of age ball. And Romanova again impressed, this time as the evil Rothbart’s daughter Odile. With wonderfully controlled whirling fouettés she deceives Seigfried into choosing her as his bride . . . The St Petersburg Classic Ballet brings great charm to this piece. They and Tchaikovsky’s delicious melodies easily sweep you through two and a half hours of meditative delight.

WE ARE BRONTË at the Wardrobe Theatre, Bristol

Angus Barr and Sarah Corbett are irresistibly funny. Their faces have qualities that one associates with some of the greats of the silent movie era – pale, gaunt and wide-eyed, it is hard not to be fascinated by them. Dressed in black and wearing dark wispy wigs, they are not afraid to let silence play a part in a crazy mix of physical theatre, improv and stand-up that constantly keeps the audience on its toes, giggling and guffawing . . .

THE LIGHT PRINCESS at the Bristol Tobacco Factory

The Light Princess from Tobacco Factory Theatres in association with Peepolykus and directed by John Nicholson, succeeds on many levels. That something special was in the air was immediately apparent as you entered the theatre itself – the usual simple black-draped entrance had been transformed into a wall of trees and flowers twinkling with lights. A slight mist hung in the air, while large white candles marked out the front of the stage are a . . . deserves all the accolades that surely must come its way.
